West 74th Street and Central Park West (from a taxi) ... why is this licorice strip of a “spoiler” on the back of this E-Class?
Oh, and the owner had stripped off a lot of the badging, which I quite like.

Looks like an e63 to me.

Note it also has a very mild roof spoiler, too. The trunk/lip spoiler is likely a stock item - my E250 even has one. On AMG cars, they can be carbon fiber (or dark).
And yeah, I think I see E63 exhaust tips although the wheels don’t look like typical E63, more common on E550 - but they could be for snow/winter use. This is probably a 2012-13 car.

Yup, E63's have that spoiler:

You gotta keep it on the ground when you go above 120.

I physically lack the ability to handle that level of feeling downforce. It’s just too much.

This car lives in Manhattan - it hardly needs to be a speed demon.

That looks dumber than the spoiler on my ‘97 SHO, and that looked pretty dumb.

And the rub is, they probably tacked 450 bucks onto the price for that thing.

Drag reduction for that 0.1mpg that they need for the CAFE

I don’t mind it, but white would look better.

More like $4,500

Probably creates a sharper edge for air to come clean off of versus a more rounded corner that could possibly promote adhesion and drag. May not generate downforce but might help with drag a bit.

Pretty sure that’s part of the $4.500 AMG sports package. That’s a highly functional, exceptionaly engineered strip of carbon fiber. Probably comes with trunk reinforcement for all that downforce

It’s all about 0-40 runs no doubt.

You mivht think its stupid, but youd be amazed how much even that does for not only downforce/reduction of lift, but also possibly lowering drag and decreasing noise levels.

Carbon fiber adds lightness.

I’d say that’s about 30 to 50 counts of rear lift reduction, by the looks of it. Ten bucks says that’s content the Mercedes vehicle dynamics guys asked for on the AMG to counter the increased aerodynamic lift you get from the wider tires. Wider tires always make a little more lift. So will increased cooling airflow, which an AMG would certainly need over a base E-Class. There’s probably a similar lift reducing change to the splitter or air dam (whichever these cars have up front). Fifty counts of lift delta isn’t a big difference, but it’s certainly perceptible at speed. Likely they have a high speed stability criteria in their design process, and they just needed a little aero tweak to meet it. Not at all uncommon.
Sincerely, Automotive Aerodynmacist.

A Gurney Flap would be standing straight up. This is just a plain trailing edge spoiler.

Still, it makes me angry when manufacturers take shit out then claim it’s a SUPERLEGGERA! when it’s just a decontented car. Sure, the spoiler is an addition, but to what end?

If you notice there’s also another spoiler at the top of the rear window, those are a common ebay accessory for lots of cars, like this .
Whereas the E63 AMG from the same generation has either no trunk lip, a painted one, or a CF one, and no roof spoiler. I believe there was some kind of CF appearance package that wasn’t any sort of “oh it’s so light now” claim.
Note the wheels on the E63 are similar but the same as the one in the car you spotted.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
